As conflicts continue to erupt around the world, threatening global security and coexistence, the hope for peace is also ignited among citizens. In May 2024, citizens from all continents will join hands to participate in the “HWPL 11th World Peace Declaration Commemoration and Peace Walk” organized by the United Nations-affiliated non-governmental organization “Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Light Restoration” (HWPL). The theme of this event is “Global Citizen Communication for Reconciliation and Tolerance”, aiming to cultivate and share a global culture of peace.
The flagship event will kick off on May 25 at the Peace Gate in Olympic Park, Seoul, South Korea. In approximately 50 countries, the Peace Walks will be complemented by various peace-building activities. Participants can expect signature walks reflecting each country’s unique characteristics, as well as peace performances, video screenings, photography exhibitions, poster drawing, sports events, markets and volunteer opportunities. Tree planting ceremonies and “free hugs” events further emphasize the spirit of solidarity and environmental well-being.
The event will also feature booths showcasing patriotic veterans, the horrors of war, and the devastation caused by nuclear waste in the South Pacific nation. HWPL officials said it would be an opportunity to showcase the harsh realities of war and remind people of the importance of peace. As part of the commemoration of the event, the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) under HWPL will host a month-long online Youth Empowerment Peace Course (YEPC) starting in late 2019.
In April, in partnership with youth organizations in Solomon Islands, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, approximately 50 young people applied and participated in the program, which was themed “The Power of Youth and Solutions for Human Rights and World Peace in This Time.”
Serena Kwon of IPYG said that the Fijian and Solomon Islands youth who participated in the YEPC training program will participate in the Peace Walk on May 25 at Albert Park in Suva, Fiji and the Solomon Islands National University in Honiara, Solomon Islands respectively, which will be a meaningful peace advocacy event to commemorate the release of the World Peace Declaration.
The Commemorative World Peace Declaration and Peace Walk was held at the Peace Gate in Olympic Park, Seoul in 2013, with 30,000 young people from around the world advocating for peace each year. The declaration outlines the role of individuals from all walks of life in achieving peace and calls for global solidarity.
Chairman Lee Man-hee said at the 10th anniversary event last year: “We have been calling for peace around the world since we jointly pledged to work for world peace 10 years ago. We advocate that peace be taught in homes and schools, and that everyone should become a messenger of peace.” He also emphasized: “Everyone should unite in the name of peace and work together to create a better world and pass it on to future generations. This is what we should do in this era we live in.”
HWPL recently issued a statement on the conflict between Israel and Iran, highlighting the devastating impact it has on civilians. “Organizations around the world have united with HWPL in peaceful solidarity to urge Iran and Israel to immediately cease their aggression and engage in dialogue to achieve peace,” the statement said.
