The Surinamese political organization DA’91 today sent a letter to the Organization of American States (OAS) to inform it of the Constitutional Court’s review of Article 31, paragraph 6.
This step was taken following previous contacts with the Organization of American States, following the legal approval of a 1,000% increase in deposits in October 2023, and in response to statements of intimidation and threats made by members of the Supreme Council of State shortly before and after.
DA’91 president Angelic Del Castilho said the behavior of certain factions in the National Assembly did not bode well for the upcoming elections.
“Fairness and justice in many institutions could be strained by this attitude from the dominant faction,” Del Castillo said.
DA’91 stressed that they will continue to monitor democracy and the rule of law in Suriname under any circumstances. “We will fight fearlessly for its preservation and protection, and we expect you to always be at our side,” added Del Castillo.
The political organization called on the international community to remain vigilant and supportive to ensure that Suriname’s democratic process is fair and equitable.
