A 33-year-old Moroccan man living in Pavia, Italy, died in a traffic accident in May 2017. In a ruling on August 6, the Municipal Court ordered the state to pay 2 million euros in compensation to his family living in Morocco.
The Court of Pavia ordered the Road Victims Guarantee Fund to pay 2 million euros to the victim, MH, who died on May 18, 2017 in a car accident on Provincial Road 412 in the province of Landriano, his wife, children, mother and 17 siblings who live in Morocco.

The thirty-year-old man had been living in Italy for about seven months. He made a living by selling fruit at the market in Vigevano. He sent most of the proceeds from this small business to his family in Morocco. On May 18, 2017, he was involved in a serious traffic accident. The car carrying him ran off the road and slammed into the guardrail. The Moroccan died from his injuries.
The driver of the car, also of Moroccan origin and without a driving licence, was convicted of road homicide. The vehicle was an Alfa Romeo 156 owned by a third party, whose insurance policy had expired. The insurance company objected to compensation to the victim’s relatives, saying the relationship had not been “proven”.

The Moroccan’s family then filed a complaint. On the advice of lawyer Angelo Raffaele Miceli, they eventually won the case and will receive 2 million euros in compensation, which will be paid to them from the Road Victims Guarantee Fund.
