Statement: It is with great sadness and a profound sense of loss that we inform you of the sudden death on Monday 12th August 2024 of our dear friend and colleague, Deputy Chief Sheriff Debbye Louise Ferguson.

Debbie Ferguson was admitted to the Bahamas Bar on November 11, 1994, after graduating from the Norman Manley Law School. A few days later, on November 14, she began her legal career in the Attorney General’s Office as an Assistant Legal Counsel. She excelled in the Attorney General’s Office and was eventually promoted to Senior Legal Counsel.

Debbie Ferguson entered the judiciary as a paid circuit magistrate for the Northern Region on 3 January 2003. She was appointed Deputy Coroner on 23 February 2011. On 23 February 2015, she was promoted to Deputy Chief Magistrate (Northern Region), a position she performed diligently until her untimely death.

“As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate her life and legacy. She will be remembered for her integrity, fair and balanced decision-making, dedication to upholding the rule of law, and compassionate approach to justice.”
