The Venezuelan Solidarity Association, based in the Canary Islands (Atlantic), has asked Spanish authorities to immediately speed up the process of residence and work permits for Venezuelan migrants without having to apply for asylum.
The association, which was founded in 2019 in the Canary Islands and brings together Venezuelan migrants and those returning to Spain, noted in a statement that the situation in Venezuela is in a state of “war” and asked the Spanish government to take measures to protect and guarantee the health of Venezuelan citizens who are displaced.
Tensions have risen in Venezuela following the July 28 election, in which the ruling party gave President Nicolas Maduro victory without releasing official records, while the opposition, led by Edmundo González, claimed victory by a large margin.
Protests and clashes between the opposition and Chavistas have left more than 1,200 people detained and 24 dead in the South American country, while the international community has demanded transparency and called for peaceful dialogue.
“We hope that a climate of peace, freedom, democracy, security and coexistence will prevail in Venezuela and we reiterate our commitment to continue supporting all migrants and displaced persons who seek hope for a future for our families,” the association said.
More than 400,000 people born in Venezuela live in Spain, with even more in the Canary Islands and Madrid, where thousands have mobilized in recent weeks to demand recognition of Edmundo González’s victory.
