An article published on Sunday 19 August 1984 reported on the Nadroga Stallions’ victory over Lautoka to maintain their unbeaten record.
The Stallions continued to dominate the Air Pacific-FRU competition, reportedly defeating Lautoka 17-9 in a thrilling contest at Churchill Park.
The match was cheered by the 4,500 spectators who witnessed the skill and determination displayed by both teams.
From the outset, the Nadroga side asserted their authority, quickly gaining territorial advantage and scoring early on with a penalty kick from Tawak Dakunibbrui from 40 metres out.
The early lead set the tone for a strong performance from Nadroga, whose forwards showed superior prowess on the lineout, in the faceoff and in possession.
One spectator said: “It was a real pleasure to see Nadroga’s forwards dominate.”
“Their strong ability to tear the ball apart and fight for the ball put Lautoka at a disadvantage from the start.”
The first breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Sunia Nadruku created a scoring chance with a well-aimed shot.
Despite the initial turnover, former Stallions outside linebacker Jone Ratu seized the opportunity and crossed the end line to give Nadroga a 7-0 lead at halftime.
Another spectator commented during the break: “Lautoka’s defence is very tenacious.”
“They fought hard and prevented Nadroga from extending their lead.”
In the second half, Lautoka fought back fiercely, reducing the score gap with a penalty kick from Nasoni Buri, and then bravely resisted Nadroga’s attack.
However, Nadroga’s resilience showed, especially with Peceli Tuisawau’s try 15 minutes into the half, which extended the lead to 11-3.
Many spectators said their efforts to penetrate the Nadroga defence were commendable, especially the crucial try from captain Eneri Ratudradra.
The atmosphere of the game was highly tense and with time running out, the Lautoka team tried their best in the final moments of the game, eager to reverse the score.
However, Nadroga’s defence held their ground and did not allow Lautoka any chances.
The match was eventually won by Nadroga in injury time when half-back Meli Nasauravua rushed out from the blind side and scored the decisive goal to secure the victory.
Dacunibbruy’s successful conversion made the final score 17-9, maintaining Nadroga’s perfect record in the tournament.
