Tropical Storm Ernesto slammed into the northeastern Caribbean on Tuesday, hitting Puerto Rico, where officials closed schools and government agencies, The Associated Press Report.
On Tuesday morning, the storm was located about 300 miles (480 kilometers) east-southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph) and was moving west at 18 mph (30 kph).
“It’s not a hurricane, but it will bring heavy rains anyway,” Gov. Pedro Pierrusi said, urging people to seek shelter by Tuesday evening.
As part of final preparations, he activated the National Guard, while crews across the island visited flood-prone areas and elderly residents. Forecasters warned of the possibility of widespread flooding and landslides in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where 6 to 8 inches of rain were expected.
Tropical storm warnings have been issued for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, Guadeloupe, St. Martin, St. Barts and St. Maarten. The National Hurricane Center said Ernesto was expected to move over or near Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands by Tuesday evening.
