After 70 years of operation, the Slovak Vodohospodársky podnik (SVP) has started the reconstruction of the Orava Dam. They were informed about this by the Ministry of Environment on Tuesday. The related works of repair and lowering the water level will be carried out in August and September, after which the reservoir will be filled to normal level.
According to Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS nominee), this is the largest dam in Slovakia and is of national economic as well as ecological significance. “I assure you that protecting the most valuable thing in Slovakia – water – is an absolute priority for me. I want state-owned enterprises to fulfill their legal duties first and foremost and have sufficient funds to do so.” He promised.
Taraba stressed that the measures implemented will improve the efficiency and reliability of water structures during floods. They will also ensure a stable supply of high-quality drinking water and contribute to the reliable use of water to produce clean electricity.
The conclusions of the technical and safety supervision indicate that the guide elements of the temporary fence need to be rebuilt and replaced, including necessary modifications to the associated structures. According to Senior Vice President Jozef Moravčík, the disassembly and subsequent assembly of the guide elements will be done by divers underwater. “This measure is important to minimise restrictions on operations and recreation. Under these circumstances, we will continue to reduce reservoir levels below the flap threshold of 597 metres above sea level, two metres below normal levels.” Moravchik said Tuesday.
They waited eight years for funds to repair the building.
The director stressed that they had been waiting for eight years for the restoration, and the accumulation of financial resources was particularly long. “The estimated value of the competition is €225,000 excluding VAT,” He pointed out.
Water managers designed the reconstruction works to minimize the impact on traffic. They consulted the affected municipalities and authorities about the restrictions. During the repair period, vehicle traffic will be partially restricted, namely on part of the lane in the Trstena-Namestovo direction. The second lane in the Namestovo-Trstena direction will be in normal mode.
The Orava Dam covers an area of 3,347 hectares and has the largest water volume, totaling 367,152,000 cubic meters. The reservoir is one of 302 reservoirs managed by the SVP.
