Henrique Lalim, a member of the New Democratic Party and former member of the Popular Liberation Party, disagrees with some political parties openly calling for Surinamese national unity.
“It’s not our fault that we were brought here. Me as a Javanese, you as a Hindustani, Maroon… We were gathered here by the white people. But in the end we are all Surinamese and must take this country to greater heights. We are together and we have a role to play: we must work together to get Suriname out of this mess! This can be done by May 25, 2025,” Lalim said at a meeting on Saturday evening, where the structure of Wanica was presented to the NDP board.
These include Lalim’s old political institutions, ABOP and PL, which have recently repeatedly called on the political stage to tie Afro-Surinamese and Javanese together. PL itself focuses on the approximately 65,000 votes that Javanese voters can provide.
Lalim noted that it is important that every Surinamese has the freedom to go to work, without pressure, without pressure from employers or certain party loyalists. The only binding needed for this is for all Surinamese to come together after May 25, 2025, with a solid plan to further develop Suriname.
“We should be able to have this freedom again. Let’s be honest: during the Bouterse government, we ignored Sveti. It didn’t matter who the other person was then, because unu no ben weri den man ede. Today, when you get up, you look at yourself in the mirror and say: ‘Oh my God, do I have to go back to work? Go through that pressure again?’
Nowadays, when you leave your home and stand in front of the cashier, you no longer have the freedom to spend. Because he musu sdon Denki: san mo nyan tamara? So your wallet should have freedom again. You should also have the freedom to express your opinion. So Suriname must get rid of the curse we are in. A San ne waka, a san no Bun gi unu health. Wani or yu no wani yo sikie ini a kondre disi,” said Lalim.
