The Minister of Labour, Dr. Enas Attari, discussed with a delegation from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) the proposed interventions by the Agency to employ refugee workers in the camps, especially those in the worst affected camps.

Dr. Attari briefed UNRWA on the political, social and economic consequences for workers and their families following the events of 7 October, including increased job losses, high unemployment, deteriorating living conditions, the forced dismissal of 200,000 workers from their workplaces within the Green Line, restrictions on the movement of workers in the West Bank, and the systematic Israeli occupation of our people and their property.

Dr. Attari stressed the need to provide sustainable employment opportunities for refugee workers and women, taking into account the provision of a decent and safe working environment for workers, and pointed out the interventions taken by the Ministry to alleviate the high unemployment rate and provide relief to those affected by mobilizing support for workers, as well as the projects implemented by the Palestinian Employment Fund, in terms of supporting different groups, supporting enterprises and pioneering projects, and providing training, qualifications, employment, etc., with the goal of providing employment opportunities and empowering women, youth and marginalized groups in the Palestinian labor market.

UNRWA informed the Minister about the interventions provided by UNRWA and the projects and programmes being implemented in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and expressed its willingness to work closely with UNRWA on the interventions of the Ministry for refugee workers to mitigate the consequences of the war in Gaza and the negative impacts arising therefrom.
