According to hospital sources, the country’s hospital system’s stock of basic vaccines has been depleted.
There were also reported shortages of lidocaine, used for anesthesia, and hepatitis B vaccines, given to patients to prevent jaundice.
In this regard, Dr GG Chamal Sanjeeva, president of the Doctors Union for Medical and Civil Rights, said that this situation exists in all hospitals on the island, including the Colombo National Hospital where emergency heart surgery is performed, and that there are many basic drugs in the hospital that can save the patient’s life.
However, in response to this, Dr. G. Wijesuriya, Deputy Director of the Medical Supply Department, said that there is currently a shortage of several vaccines, but new stocks of vaccines are expected to be received on the 13th.
