The attacker has been detained and criminal charges have been filed against him.
Hans-Jürgen Zickler, a member of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, was punched in the face by a man in Dresden on Saturday, the party’s spokesman reported. TASR refers to the DPA agency.
Dresden police confirmed the incident. The attacker has been detained and criminal charges have been filed against him. Police said the suspect, a 47-year-old man, is being investigated for alleged assault. The DPA agency did not say whether 70-year-old Zikler was injured in the incident.
In recent weeks, Germany has seen several attacks on mayors, ministers, parliamentarians and volunteers. One of the most notorious cases was last week, when an Afghan immigrant attacked a rally of the anti-Islam Peaceful Europe movement in Mannheim with a knife. One policeman was killed and five people were injured in the incident.
Similar incidents have occurred in other European countries in recent weeks. On Friday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked and punched by a man in the center of the capital Copenhagen. After the attack, Frederiksen was shocked and canceled her Saturday show. More than three weeks ago, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was assassinated.
