Bankruptcies on the rise

The number of business bankruptcies adjusted for court dates fluctuates widely. In May 2013, the number of bankruptcies peaked at 911. The number then continued to decline until August 2017, after which it remained fairly stable until mid-2020. The number then fell again, reaching an all-time low of 109 in August 2021. Since May 2022, the number of bankruptcies has been rising year by year.

Most bankruptcies occur in the trade sector

Excluding court days, a total of 453 companies and institutions (including individual industrial and commercial households) went bankrupt in July, among which the trade industry had the largest number of bankruptcies, reaching 108, an increase of 60 from June.

The large increase in trade bankruptcies is partly due to the fact that there was one more court day in July than in June. Many courts issue bankruptcy decisions on fixed days of the week. Therefore, some months have more court days than others. June also saw a relatively low number of trade bankruptcies. In addition, a company declared bankrupt has relatively many business locations, and each business location counts towards bankruptcy.

The trade sector is one of the sectors with the largest number of companies. In contrast, the accommodation and food service sector had the most bankruptcies in July.
