Last week, a preliminary hearing in the criminal case of Estonian citizen Svetlana Burtseva took place at the Harju District Court in Estonia. She has been detained since early March on suspicion of working with Russian state propaganda media. The Estonian Prosecutor’s Office has charged Burtseva with violating international sanctions and treason.
Burtseva’s lawyer, Sven Silas, submitted a request to transfer the indictment back to the prosecutor’s office. He believes that the prosecution’s case is flawed. “From the indictment, the court can see that some of the documentary evidence is less than ten pages long, and some is longer. Is there a video?” Judge Leah Pakley asked during the preliminary hearing in the case. “No, but we have a whole book,” replied State Prosecutor Eneli Lauritz.

Burtseva received Estonian citizenship by naturalization in 1994. Since 2017, she has been working for the Russian media group “Rossija Segodnya”, reporting on public events around our northern neighbor in its various Estonian online editions.
