Conference on Comprehensive and Equitable Urbanization was a Success

As part of its commitment to inclusive and equitable urbanization, the Cities Alliance, with the support of the Swiss Cooperation (Department of Development and Cooperation, DDC), was in Hammamet from 30 July to 1 August.

The event brought together international experts, representatives of 19 cities and Tunisian specialists to exchange ideas and deepen understanding on this fundamental and important topic.

This course is part of the Femmedina project, an innovative initiative to strengthen the role of women as key actors in local development. The aim of the project is to promote the inclusion and empowerment of women in the public spaces of ancient cities. Four partner cities: Sousse, Marsaken, Mahdia and Kairouan.

International Exchange: Concepts and Specific Projects

During this conference, a fruitful exchange took place with international experts, during which the basic concepts of gender-sensitive urban planning were discussed and illustrated through concrete projects from cities in Austria (Vienna), South America (Argentina), the Netherlands (Rotterdam), Belgium, Pakistan and Nepal.

The presentations highlighted best practices and innovative approaches to integrating gender equality into urban projects.

Focus on Tunisia: Challenges and solutions for inclusive urbanization

Participants also analysed the institutional framework in Tunisia related to urban planning and gender, focusing on the importance of a brainstorming session hosted by the National University of Tunisia (FNCT). ، From identifying local challenges to proposing concrete solutions to enhance inclusiveness in Tunisia’s urban projects, the recommendations arising from these discussions will be incorporated into the University-led Network on Urban Planning (FNCT)..

project Femedina: In-depth research and tangible results

An in-depth case study of the Femmedina project allowed participants to discover in detail the tools and methods for integrating gender into urban planning and highlighted the project’s practical results and positive impact on the local community, demonstrating the effectiveness of the approach adopted.

The prospects and future of gender-responsive urbanization

The capacity-building session was a great success, providing participants with valuable knowledge and practical tools to promote gender-responsive urbanization. Cities Alliance hopes that this initiative will inspire other similar actions in Tunisia and elsewhere, and call for wider adoption of these inclusive practices.
