U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken Israeli tanks rolled into the main city in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday as the Special Representative for Palestine urged Israel to do more to protect Palestinian civilians in its war with Hamas.
Two days after the United States vetoed a UN call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, Blink Said Israel needs to give “high priority” to protecting civilians in Gaza and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
“The key is to ensure that military operations are conducted with the protection of civilians in mind,” Blinken said on CNN’s State of the Union.
“I think the intention is there. But the results don’t always show up,” he said.
The steps include Blink Said the United States “did not have adequate understanding” of “de-conflict times, locations and routes” that would allow humanitarian operations to deliver aid and help civilians out of danger.
IDF advances in Gaza
Israeli forces advanced into the center of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza on Sunday after a night of fierce fighting, while warplanes bombed the western part of the city.
Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas since October 7, when Hamas terrorists crossed the border and wreaked havoc in Israeli towns, gunning down families in their homes, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages.
Hamas health authorities in Gaza say about 18,000 Palestinians have been killed and 49,500 injured in the war since it began. Thousands more are missing and presumed dead.
On Friday, the United States blocked a U.N. effort to enforce a ceasefire, an option that American and Israeli officials said would only benefit Hamas.
The Biden administration also used emergency powers to allow the sale of about 14,000 tank shells to Israel without congressional review, the Pentagon said Saturday.
