University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja.) graduate student Arlando Dunkley has been awarded the 2019 Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) Renewable Energy Scholarship.
Mr. Dunkley is from Spanish Town and attended St. Jago High School, where he sat for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and passed nine Mathematics subjects with distinction. He then went on to UTech University to study for a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, graduating with distinction. During his undergraduate studies, Mr. Dunkley was a member of the University Speech and Debate Society and the Institution of Chemical Engineers. He was also the winner of the Best Chemical Engineering Program in 2016.
Mr. Dunkley is currently studying for a Master of Science in Renewable Energy Engineering. As the 2019 scholarship recipient, Mr. Dunkley will receive a scholarship of J$2 million, spread over two years, to cover all tuition fees for the duration of his degree program.
“Just as energy is a driver of growth and development, education is a vital pillar in the development process… That is why in 2017 the PCJ seeks to expand its impact on education, broadening its focus to include advanced research and development activities,” said Fayval Williams, Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, in her keynote speech at a luncheon held in the PCJ auditorium on Wednesday (March 27) to introduce the new scholars.
Minister Williams encouraged Mr Dunkley to use the knowledge he would gain upon completing his studies, “not only for personal pursuits but also to contribute to nation building”, she added.
“PCJ is always looking to engage young people and apply their young innovation and ingenuity to solving some of the energy challenges facing Jamaica,” said Brian Richardson, PCJ Acting Group General Manager.
Mr Richardson said he was delighted to welcome Alando to the team and “wished him all the best as he develops his intellectual abilities and endeavours to contribute to the development of our country”.
In his response, Dunkley said: “I am delighted to have been awarded the PCJ Renewable Energy Scholarship, which will enable me to achieve one of my career and educational ambitions. Many technological innovations in the energy sector are pioneered in academia, and I hope to be part of the team that is changing the energy landscape in Jamaica.”
The university will soon open applications for the 2020 scholarships.
