DENVER (AP) — Four men were shot and killed and one woman was hospitalized with gunshot wounds during a wave of violence over the weekend in the Denver suburb of Commerce City.

A person of interest in one of the cases was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police reported Sunday.

Separately, one person was shot and killed and three people were injured in two separate incidents in Aurora, in the Denver metropolitan area, on Sunday.

A series of shootings and stabbings in Denver has left one person dead and six people injured, police said.

Commerce City Police Department spokeswoman Joanna Small said it had been an “extremely violent” weekend for the rapidly expanding community of about 70,000 people northeast of Denver near the city’s airport.

“We average about five or six homicides a year,” he said. “Now we’re talking about four murders in 39 hours and one extremely serious individual … The fact that there’s no connection between these crimes is even more disturbing.”

A possible motive for the shooting has not been released.

The first incident occurred Friday night in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven in Commerce City. A man and a woman were shot and the man later died. As of Sunday morning, the woman remained in hospital in critical condition, according to Small.

Police later tried to contact a truck driver involved in the shooting, but he fled and was found dead by suicide Sunday morning.

A man was shot and killed in the parking lot of a park with a swimming pool in Commerce City on Saturday night. One person was in custody, but Small declined to provide further details.

Later that evening, police responded to a shooting detected by the Commerce City Firearms Control System. According to authorities, officers found a stolen vehicle with three people inside that fled and crashed. A passenger was found dead in the vehicle with a gunshot wound.

A second passenger and the driver were injured in the crash and taken into custody. Officers returning to the shooting scene found a man shot to death in the yard of a residence, Small said.

He said the victim and others in the case are believed to be minors.

Small said there was no known connection between the store shooting, the park and the residential area. He declined to provide further details, saying the investigation was ongoing.

The fatal shooting in Aurora happened around 2 a.m. in the parking lot of a nightclub, according to police. No details about the victims have been released. The second victim, a 34-year-old man, was shot multiple times but took himself to a hospital and is expected to survive, police said. No arrests have been made.

Around the same time, a shooting in an Aurora residential area left one man hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said, adding that a second person stabbed in that incident was expected to survive.
