New Zealand will invest more than NZ$6 million to help the Marshall Islands better prepare for and adapt to risks associated with natural disasters and climate change.
New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced the financial support in Majuro on Monday.
Peters, who is visiting the Micronesia sub-region this week, said New Zealand was committed to meeting the challenges of the “blue continent”.
“So we will invest more to support the Marshall Islands’ recovery and prosperity,” he said.
Peters said the Marshall Islands, a nation of low-lying atolls and islands, is on the front line of natural disasters and the impacts of climate change.
He said the $6.2 million project aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries and make island communities more resilient in dealing with disasters and the impacts of climate change.

The New Zealand delegation will meet with Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine, Assistant Minister Blameti Lakjohn, Foreign Minister Kalani Kaneko and other ministers and members of Parliament.
The delegation will next travel to the Federated States of Micronesia and Palau.
Before the Pacific mission, Peters said “Ignore your neighbors at your peril”.
“From the perspective of our long-term security and long-term interests, our neighbors are very important to us.”
