It was the evening of April 20, just before ten o’clock. It was still dark outside. Katja – as her friends and relatives call her – drove home to pick up some things and then to her friend’s house. “There was only a minute and a half left to get home, but there was really nothing to drive there. Then I got up in the intensive care unit of the hospital,” she recalls. She had been involved in a head-on collision in Lielbirze, and Katja (28) happened not to be with her seven-year-old son. The driver of the other car was drunk at the time.
When I first contacted the woman to agree on a meeting place, she added: “I haven’t been able to go to Riga yet, only to Jelgava.” Returning to the role of driver required multiple attempts and a lot of courage: “As soon as I sat down, the panic set in. I was sweating, I wanted to cry, scream – no, I didn’t want to, I couldn’t. Every time I drove past that place, I was afraid, I thought, you have to have the baby, you have to go to the doctor, and then I couldn’t. , I was very, very afraid, but little by little…”
The State Police (VP) said three people were injured in the accident, criminal proceedings have been initiated and an investigation is ongoing. According to Katya, there were three people in the second car, but one of them escaped. The police have not yet released more information about the incident.
“Our police force doesn’t have the resources to do that.”
