A helicopter crashed into the roof of a hotel in the tourist town of Cairns in northeastern Australia on Monday night, killing the pilot. No one else was on board.
The accident happened at 2am on Monday in the popular Queensland destination. Cairns is the starting point for many tourists heading to the northeast coast to visit the Great Barrier Reef.
ABC Reports said the pilot, who died in the accident, was alone in the helicopter when it crashed.
The Hilton DoubleTree Hotel where the incident occurred has been evacuated, police said. No one on the ground was reported injured, but two elderly people in the building were taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
A video shared on social media showed a fire on the hotel roof. Two of the helicopter’s rotor blades ended up in the hotel’s pool, and pictures in the media showed parts of the helicopter lying on the ground.
Two hotel guests told ABC they heard a deafening bang that felt like a bomb going off, saw fire on one side of the building, then more alarms went off and the evacuation began.
