President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said the establishment of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Energy Hub in the Western Region will serve as a catalyst for operational efficiency and economic growth in the region.
He said the government was committed to the decentralization agenda which aimed to ensure that every region benefited from the country’s abundant resources.
President Akufo-Addo made the remarks while inaugurating the NNPC Energy Building, which will be equipped with a 300-seat conference room, offices, cafeteria and business centre for use by the corporation and other players in the oil industry.
The seven-storey building is located at Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) Lane in the Takoradi Railway Port Constituency and covers an area of over 11,000 square metres.
The project was launched in August 2020 and encountered logistical and financial challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they overcame the difficulties and finally completed it.
“It is through perseverance that we have achieved this point. We thank the Western Regional Minister, Chiefs, Land Commission, the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the contractors and the project management team for the critical role they played in achieving this feat,” the President said.
He noted that the GNPC Energy House will continue to be a hub for strengthening activities in this field and creating direct and indirect opportunities and avenues to improve the economic lives of the people of the region and the country as a whole.
President Akufo-Addo said the Energy House should stimulate business expansion, develop the hospitality industry and boost the economy.
“We need a strong energy sector that deeply embraces skills and technology to advance human progress, build the capacity and skills of local talent and businesses, and become a beacon of excellence, innovation and hope in Ghana’s oil and gas industry,” he said.
Speaking on the activities of the GNPC Foundation, the President said the pillars of health, education, TVET and sanitation clearly spell out the Foundation’s mandate to manage human resource growth and development.
He prayed for sustainable environmental practices and social protections to ensure the industry survives beyond the current generation.
“Working with local citizens, regulators and relevant stakeholders to advance our natural ecosystems.”
State Minister of Energy Herbert Krapa noted that exploration and production of several oil wells including Jubilee, TEN and Sankofa were going well.
He said the oil industry continues to see significant growth in production and pledged the ministry’s resolve to work with stakeholders to ensure that oil production continues to grow.
Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, said the government had kept its promises and the president had delivered goodwill to the people of the Western Region in the areas of education, health and roads.
Currently, the region benefits from 2,000 km of road projects, an increase in free high school enrolment from 13,000 to 650,000, and hospital reconstruction and construction projects.
“Mr President, this is a testament to your love for this region… you are truly an Ado singing and dancing genius,” Mr Darko Mensah said to applause from the audience.
