On the 15th day of the Paris Olympics, the United States won gold medals in women’s soccer and men’s basketball, while the British and Northern Irish teams won medals in synchronized swimming, track and field, diving and taekwondo.
Kate Shortman and Izzy Thorpe won silver in the duet freestyle, Britain’s first medal in synchronised swimming.
Noah Williams won bronze in the men’s 10m platform diving final, earning Britain its first medal of the day and his second of the Games.
Meanwhile, Caden Cunningham won silver in the over-80kg category, missing out on becoming the first British man to win an Olympic taekwondo gold.
Georgia Bell set a British record to win bronze in the 1500m, while the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay quartet also won bronze medals on the final night of Olympic athletics.
With just one day left in the Olympics, Team GB has now won 63 medals, one less than it will have at the Tokyo Games.
The British team ranked sixth in the medal table with 14 gold medals, 22 silver medals and 27 bronze medals.
If they can win five medals by Day 16, the 2024 Olympic team will break the overseas record of 67 medals from the 2016 Rio Olympics.
In women’s soccer, Great Britain’s Emma Hayes led the United States to its first title since taking over in May.
The 47-year-old is a consistent winner in club management and she maintained her Midas touch in her debut on the international stage, with Mallory Swanson’s composed second-half run helping the United States to its first gold medal since 2012.
It doomed Marta, a women’s tennis icon and six-time world player of the year who retired after her sixth and final Olympics at age 38, winning only her third silver medal.
Since women’s soccer was included in the Olympic Games in 1996, the United States has won the championship five times.
Not surprisingly, America’s dominance extends to basketball, where the U.S. has won every men’s tournament it has competed in except for 1972, 1988 and 2004.
The star-studded team of LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant was simply too strong for a French team that included NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama.
The U.S. team led 49-41 in the first half and eventually won 98-87, with Curry contributing 24 points.
Britain’s previous best result in artistic swimming (formerly synchronised swimming) was fourth place by Caroline Holmyard and Caroline Wilson in Los Angeles in 1984, when the sport made its Olympic debut.
However, for Shortman and Thorpe, who became the first Britons to win pairs medals at the world championships earlier this year, taking silver and bronze respectively, Olympic success was already a foregone conclusion.
