In the past week, the country reported 6,636 new cases of Covid-19 and seven more people died from the virus.
Epidemiologist Professor Michael Baker said New Zealand is experiencing its highest virus infection rate in 18 months.
The Ministry of Health said there were 282 confirmed cases in hospitals as of midnight Sunday.
The seven-day rolling average of cases is 948. Of the new cases in the past week, 4,338 were reinfections.

Although the current recommended quarantine period is only five days, Baker recommends that people who are still diagnosed with the coronavirus should wait until the sixth or seventh day to get tested before returning to society.

“The biology hasn’t changed,” Baker said, but there’s more pressure for people to return to work and school.
Baker said he hopes there will be money in this week’s budget to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.
It is important for health and productivity that the government continues to fund booster shots, RAT testing, and antiviral drugs.
Once people have to pay for these things, low-income families lose out on opportunities.
Baker said fairness and justice must be maintained.
