Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will visit Russia from August 12 to 14 and is expected to meet with Vladimir Putin, Palestinian officials said today.
“The president will arrive on the evening of August 12. He is expected to meet with President Putin on Tuesday (…). “He will leave on the 14th, but will meet with Arab ambassadors,” said Palestinian ambassador to Moscow Abdul Hafez al-Noffal, according to Russian news agency TASS.
The diplomat said the main topic of the talks would be “the situation in Gaza”. “We will discuss the role of Russia and what it can do. The situation there is very difficult and Russia is a country near us,” he said.
A source in Mahmoud Abbas’ office confirmed the visit to AFP and clarified that Abbas would then travel to Turkey.
In early November, Abbas’ long-planned trip to Russia was postponed.
After Moscow, Abbas is expected to visit Turkey to meet with that country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before addressing Turkey’s National Assembly in Ankara.
