82 years ago today, the Allies launched the final battle to end Japan’s Pacific invasion on Guadalcanal, the scene of the war’s bloodiest battle.
Yesterday, the United States held a memorial ceremony at the Skyline Monument to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who fought against the Japanese army at that time.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele attended the memorial ceremony in the early hours of the morning and delivered an important speech, stressing the need to maintain and safeguard peace.
Prime Minister Manele called on world leaders to choose peace over war, adding that the Battle of Guadalcanal was proof enough of the disastrous effects of war.

The Prime Minister also stressed that without these brave people, people would not be enjoying the future they have today.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to the Allied forces and local heroes who assisted them in the fight against the then Japanese Army.
He then attended the Coastwatch Memorial Service on Federal Street and laid a wreath to pay tribute to local heroes.
The granddaughter of one of the most prominent local heroes of the Second World War, Sir Jacob Vouza, had the honour of delivering the keynote address.
The commemoration in memory of the Allied Forces and Coastwatchers is an annual event held by the U.S. Embassy in Papua New Guinea and the Office of the U.S. Ambassador in Honiara.
