Members of the Anti-Smuggling Task Force of the Limpopo Provincial Police Force in South Africa have arrested a 32-year-old man in possession of a white Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, which was suspected to be stolen.
The breakthrough came after the South African Police Service (SAPS) received a tip-off that a stolen car was being smuggled into neighbouring Zimbabwe through the Beitbridge port of entry.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said: “Police responded quickly and found a white Toyota Prado VX on the R37 from Lebowakgomo to Polokwane, which had been stolen on Monday, August 5, 2024, from the Viliria police area in Pretoria, Gauteng.”
Ledwaba said police stopped the SUV and after searching it, its driver “was a South African who could not produce valid documentation for the vehicle”.
The man was arrested at the scene for being in possession of a motor vehicle that appeared to be stolen.
Ledwaba added: “Police confirmed that the vehicle was a white Toyota Prado valued at R900 000.”
Meanwhile, Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the arrest and praised police officers for their “consistent dedication to duty and perseverance in recovering stolen vehicles”.
The arrested man will appear in the Thabamopo Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
On Friday, The Times of India reported that a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 worth R4 million was recovered by police in Lebowakgomo, near Polokwane, Limpopo.
The recovered vehicle reportedly belonged to Nelson Mandela, a member of parliament and grandson of former president Nelson Mandela.
According to police, the Toyota Land Cruiser was stolen from a car park at Menlyn Shopping Centre in Tshwane on Wednesday afternoon.
Limpopo provincial police said the giant SUV was being smuggled into Zimbabwe but was intercepted before reaching the border.
A 42-year-old Zimbabwean national has been charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and immigration offences after it was determined he had entered South Africa illegally.
