Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made his first public comments on the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ offensive in Russia’s Kursk region in a video address late Saturday, August 10, saying that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Alexander Syrsky, informed him that “the war has shifted to the territory of the aggressor,” according to Deutsche Welle.
The head of state said that such actions prove that Kiev is capable of “restoring justice” and exerting the necessary pressure on Russia. At the same time, Zelensky did not provide any details about the current situation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region and the further plans of the Ukrainian military.
Ukrainian Armed Forces offensive in the Kursk region
Since August 6, 2024, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been conducting military operations in the Kursk region. According to reports from the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Russian propaganda Telegram channel, Ukrainian troops have occupied a section of territory on the Russian border and have advanced several dozen kilometers inland. Fighting is taking place in the Kozhenevsky and Sudzhansky districts. The only point where gas from the Russian Federation enters the Ukrainian gas transportation system and is then transferred to the EU is the Sudzha GIS. In addition, the Kursk nuclear power plant is also located in the region.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported in the morning of August 10 that the Russian army had suppressed the Ukrainian army’s “breakthrough attempt” deep into the Kursk region for 24 consecutive hours. According to the department, the losses of the Ukrainian armed forces since the start of the offensive in the Kursk region totaled “up to 1,120 military personnel and 140 armored vehicles.” The data has not been independently confirmed. Kursk Mayor Igor Kuchak said that more than 16,000 people fled their homes during the four-day Ukrainian offensive. On social networks, residents of the region complained about poor evacuation organization and inaction of local authorities.
