Russia’s deputy justice minister has claimed that sexual minorities in Russia are being drawn into extremist activities.

During a panel discussion on “family values,” Sviridenko warned that supporters of the “international LGBT movement” were turning to extremist activities and becoming supporters of “homonationalism” and “gender extremism,” Tell Russian state news agency TASS
Late last year, Russia’s Ministry of Justice outlawed the international LGBT movement as an extremist organization.
The LGBT movement refers to the human rights movement for sexual minorities. It is unclear how Russia defines the activities of the international LGBT movement.

Sviridenko said the LGBT movement had recently created gay nationalist organizations in Russia that were inciting an open war between the sexes.
“They think they are superhumans, they have super ideals,” Sviridenko said.
Sviridenko claimed that the international LGBT movement has been active on Russian territory since 1984, spreading an ideology that undermines traditional family values and poses a threat to the demographic structure.
According to him, the campaign is funded by non-governmental foundations and grants from the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Russia has discriminated against LGBTI people for years, and Russian authorities have arbitrarily applied laws on extremist organizations to their political opponents.
In 2013, Russia enacted the so-called gay propaganda law, which prohibits public coverage of sexual minorities in a positive or neutral tone.
