Madge Shields, 76, is the beneficiary of a newly renovated one-bedroom home funded by the HEART/NSTA Trust.
The unit, which features a bathroom, kitchen and living room, was handed over at a ceremony on Smith Lane, Woodford Park, Kingston, on Thursday (August 8).
The project was completed under the entity’s National Development Project as part of the “TVET in Motion” initiative, which aims to enhance the safety and well-being of Ms Shields and her family.
The approximately $4 million housing project, undertaken by HEART/NSTA trainees, involved completing and repairing critical areas of the original unfinished concrete structure.
The scope of work included rough casting and painting of the exterior and front walls, installation of electrical and plumbing fittings and fixtures, construction of the roof and ceiling, installation of flooring, laying of tiles, installation of doors and windows, construction of the front wall of the building, and painting.
Dr Taneisha Ingleton, Managing Director of HEART/NSTA Trust, said the project demonstrated the organisation’s ability to respond to real social needs while fulfilling its corporate social responsibility.
“The Trust is not only committed to training and capacity building. We also look at what is happening in society and make sure the work we do is aligned with the national vision, which is why we are so proud to hand over this house to Ms Shields,” she said.
She noted that the project involves building and renovating houses for the underprivileged in the agency’s six regions, while also addressing the need to provide practical experience for trainees preparing to enter the workforce.
“We use the skills and abilities of our trainees to make home improvements or build homes from scratch for those in need,” Dr. Ingleton noted.
In her reply, Ms. Shields expressed her gratitude to the HEART/NSTA Trust and noted that the quality of life for her and her family has greatly improved.
“Thank you to all the cadets and HEART officers who made this possible. I am so grateful to everyone who provided a home for me and my family,” she said.
The program allows participants to study general construction, welding, interior decoration and electrical installation courses under the guidance of skilled instructors from the HEART/NSTA Trust.
This hands-on project is both an evaluation model and a community service program that promotes volunteerism and skills development.
