Athlete Emmanuel Wanyonyi won the 800m final this Saturday, being crowned Olympic champion after controlling the race from start to finish.
One minute, 41 seconds and 19 seconds (1:41.19). This was the time Emmanuel Wanyonyi needed to win the 800m gold medal, narrowly ahead of Canadian Marco Arop, who took silver in 1:41.20.
The 20-year-old Kenyan ended the Olympics in mythical fashion, having already set a best time of 1:44.64 in the first round when he competed on Wednesday, August 7, and then bettered his time again in the semifinals (1:43.32).
Wanyonyi confirmed his status on Saturday, achieving the third-best time in history and closing in on the world record of 1:40.91 set by compatriot David Rudisha at the 2012 London Olympics.
Note that another African won a medal in the men’s 800m. Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati finished third on the podium in 1:41.50.
