Libreville, Saturday, August 10, 2024 (Gabon News) – The former president of CAF died on Thursday, August 8, in Paris, France, at the age of 77.
Cameroonian Issa Hayatou has stepped down from his iconic role as leader of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from 1988 to 2017. A great figure in African football, he was president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fécafoot) before becoming president of the country’s football association.
Issa Hayatou also served as interim president of FIFA from 2015 to 2016 following the suspension of Sepp Blatter. He is a member of the FIFA Executive Committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Athletes pay tribute to his memory
In Cameroon, in Africa, in the African Football Confederation, FIFA and even the International Olympic Committee, the entire football world is paying tribute to a man who has left a deep impression in the history of world football, especially African football. “He was the architect of modern CAF, a great African who qualified Africa for five World Cups,” said CAF president Samuel Eto’o.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said: “CAF and African football will always be grateful to President Hayatou for his tremendous contribution to the development of African football over the years.”
“Issa Hayatou was a great enthusiast who dedicated his life to leading the greatest institution in sport,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
As a result, his name has been invited to the Olympic Games (OG) currently being held in Paris, France, and the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has paid him a well-deserved tribute. At the Olympic House and the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Olympic flags were flown at half-mast.
“He was a key figure for sport on the African continent. Issa Hayatou led FIFA during very difficult times. He always defended the role of football in the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement,” Thomas Bach explained in a press release.
