The Senegalese women’s national basketball team continues its preparations at the Marius Ndiaye Stadium for the 2026 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, which will be held in Kigali (Rwanda) from August 19 to 25. On Friday, August 9, all 19 lionesses were present during a training session under the leadership of coach Otis Hughley Jr.

Yassine Diop, who was recently promoted to captain of the Senegal team, discussed the preparations and the new players: “Since we met, the training sessions have gone well. For the first time, the whole team is completely united, we are working successfully, things are moving forward, everything is going well. The team is gradually gaining momentum, there are many new players, so it will take some time to reach complementarity, but we are working and I think it will progress over time, InshaAllah. »

“It’s great news, I believe that when you do something, you ask God to act, which I didn’t think of at the time, and for me it took a few years,” she said of the captaincy bestowed upon her. Being older in the group, it’s understandable. The message attracted me: everyone must seek to develop, so it made me step out of my comfort zone. As the leader of the team, it was necessary for me to look at how I managed my teammates. »

According to her, they will go to Kigali with the intention of winning all their matches: “When we go to the tournament, our goal is to win, which means we have three games to play. Our goal is to win these three games. Not all games are easy because we are a new team and we haven’t had enough time yet. It’s not easy anyway. We leave with the mentality that we leave to win and qualify. If it is possible to beat the team, we will do it. We will not pretend to lose the game, it will not happen. »

“We are very grateful to our coach: everything he offers us is always new, as the team is made up entirely of young people. “Good defence and offensiveness develop gradually, and we appreciate and value it,” she concluded. »
