In January, researchers found that black taxpayers are three to five times more likely to be audited. One possible reason is that the IRS disproportionately audits low-income people who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit. Law professor Dorothy Brown said this is just one of many ways that race issues permeate our tax system, history and enforcement.
Dorothy stumbled upon the hidden relationship between race and the tax system while helping her parents with their taxes. It seemed like they were paying too much in taxes. Eventually, her curiosity about this observation spawned an entire field of study.
