Latvian President calls on the EU to suspend Georgia’s candidate country status.

At the international conference “Riga Strategic Dialogue 2024”, Latvian President Edgars Rinkević sharply criticized the EU’s policy towards Georgia and the Western Balkans and stressed the need to send a clear and strong message to promote stability and democracy in the region.

He said the international community did not respond enough to Russia’s 2008 military aggression against Georgia.

The Latvian president stressed that the situation in Georgia requires swift and strict action by the European Union. He expressed concern about Russia’s growing influence in Georgia. He stressed that Latvia will support Georgia’s efforts, but only if the country respects the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

Linkevich also said that the EU should send a clear message to Georgia by suspending its candidacy to prevent the situation from further deteriorating.

If we don’t send a very clear, strong message and we just verbally express our concerns, then the situation will get worse,” he said.

Linkevich said Latvia would support Georgia’s efforts, but only if the country respected the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
