The Dutch women’s field hockey team won the Olympic women’s field hockey team gold medal for the fifth time by defeating China in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 tie in regular time.
The win means the Dutch ice hockey team has won two gold medals at the Paris Olympics, cementing the country’s reputation as a leading ice hockey nation.
The Netherlands is the most successful country in hockey’s history as an Olympic sport, winning eight gold medals, six silver medals and six bronze medals.
The Netherlands also had success in cycling earlier in the day, with Harrie Lavreysen taking gold in the individual sprint. Lavreysen was part of the Dutch team that won the team sprint earlier in the week.
Lisa van Belle and Maike van der Duin, both first-time Olympic competitors, won bronze medals in the Madison, an endurance cycling event for teams of two.
Also on Friday, Sifan Hassan won bronze in the 10km race. The defending champion finished third behind Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet and Italy’s Nadia Bartokleti. Hassan won bronze in the 5,000m on Tuesday and will compete in the marathon on Sunday.
If she wins a medal in the marathon, she will become the first woman in history to win medals in all three distances at the Olympics.
The Netherlands currently has 13 gold medals, the highest number of gold medals in their history. Together with 6 silver medals and 10 bronze medals, the Netherlands is currently ranked 8th in the medal table.
