Last month, Stuart Melvin’s errands didn’t just end with grocery shopping — he just didn’t know it yet.
An ordinary shopping trip ended when a man in Saint John, New Brunswick decided to buy some Lottery Win tickets to Shawn’s Variety by rolling the dice.
When he returned a week later, the cashier scanned the ticket that would change his life.
“I thought I won $2 … and never thought about it again,” Melvin said in an Atlantic Lottery news release Friday.
“I just looked at the regular numbers, Atlantic 49 and 6/49. I didn’t think to check the other numbers on the ticket.”

In the Lotto 6/49 drawing held on July 27, another number brought in the $1 million Golden Ball jackpot.
“It doesn’t feel real at all,” Melvin said.

He first shared the news of his winning with his sister, who couldn’t believe it and thought he was joking.
Lotto 6/49 drawings take place every Wednesday and Saturday, with two multi-million dollar jackpots up for grabs. The Classic jackpot is always set at $5 million, while the Golden Globe jackpot starts at $10 million but can go as high as over $60 million.
The Golden Ball draw guarantees a winning ticket in every drawing, and if the white ball is drawn, the winner receives $1 million, and if the golden ball is drawn, the winner receives an ever-increasing Golden Ball jackpot. On July 27, the white ball was drawn, giving Melvin the $1 million jackpot.
He said he plans to eventually use his winnings to buy a new home, and will donate much of the remaining money to charity.
In the meantime, Melvin said he “wants to sit back and relax for a bit right now.”
