The President of French Polynesia, accompanied by the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Culture, Ronny Teripaya, met this Friday with the Chinese Consul in French Polynesia, Tian Lixiao.

Discussions focused on the upcoming Austronesian Museum in Pingtang, Fujian Province, China, which is expected to be completed in late October 2024. Austronesians are a people whose language belongs to the Austronesian language family, one of the largest language families in the world, including languages ​​in Taiwan, southeastern China, Southeast Asia, Oceania and as far away as Madagascar.

In addition, several cultural projects were discussed. The Cotton Route or the classification of the Aru Cemetery are cultural projects that highlight the history of Sino-Polynesians from Fenua, participate in the cultural diversity of Mauhi, and emphasize the importance of preserving and valuing identity and historical sites. They also have tourist appeal, thus adding more places to explore in the country’s historical sites.

The two sides also discussed economic cooperation, with the focus on the Chinese tourist market as a master plan for the development of commercial tourist accommodation on land and water in French Polynesia is being drafted.

Finally, the President paid tribute to Siqi Yang, China’s first Olympic surfer to qualify for surfing, who braved the waves of Teahūpo’o at the age of 14.
