The consumer cooperatives Konzum Ústí nad Orlicí and Jednota consumer cooperative Zábřeh merged into the cooperative COOP Konzum. The merger was approved by the Office for the Protection of Economic Competition.

Konzum operates less than a hundred grocery stores in the COOP network and is the fifth largest cooperative in the network in terms of retail sales. The company also sells fuel at its COOP 24 gas stations and operates four Fortel garden supply stores. The company operates in the regions of Ust-nad-Orlicchi, Rychnov-nad-Knezno, Nachod and Svitavy.

Jednota SD Zábřeh operates 90 shops in the Olomouc region. He has been a member of the Coop network since 2008.

“According to the office’s conclusion, the merger will not cause significant disruptions to economic competition,” press spokesman Martin Swanda added.

The Union of Czech and Moravian Consumer Cooperatives (COOP Group) unites 46 consumer cooperatives with more than 100,000 members. Together they operate around 2,500 shops, which is the largest network in the Czech Republic.

Last year, COOP took over 46 stores of the bankrupt Enapo chain, which were originally operated by Rosa market. Most of them are located in South Moravia and the Zlín region.

The Hruška company, which operates 422 retail stores of the same name in the country, mainly in Moravia, has also seen changes this year. The Competition Authority has given its consent to the Hungarian investment group Oriens to take over the company through its Central European Retail Holding. We describe it in more detail here: Authorities agree Hruška chain will change owner.

The Hungarian group has already acquired other stores in the Czech Republic: from 2023, it will exclusively control the Pramen CZ company through the Flosman company and also manage the franchise network of Flop, Potraviny CZ and Flop Top retail stores.
