The annual Icelandic Ram Judging Championship will be held on August 18 at the sheep farm in Sævang, with competitions set to begin on the 14th. Preparations are going well over the weekend. There is always a good turnout for the Ram Judges, but there is competition both in the experienced Ram Judges category and in the inexperienced and scared Ram Judges category. There are usually around 50 contestants and they come from far and wide. Many people come to watch the contestants show off their talents.
The judging of the rams itself takes place like this: the recruits evaluate four adult rams in front of a jury with modern equipment and tools and rank them in order of quality. The contestants then try to evaluate the rams with their own hands and sense of purpose as weapons and try to come to the same conclusions as the judges. Unaccustomed people simply place the rams in one to four seats and argue their case. However, they usually score the rams based on individual factors such as back width, appearance and body shape, and then follow the scoring system familiar to farmers. Winners in both categories receive generous prizes.
As usual, there will be a buffet of broth and coffee throughout the day. Last year, Jón Stefánsson from Broddanes in Strändi emerged as the current champion of Iceland. It is always nice when the home team wins the title, and they will probably do their best to keep it. The winner of the senior category will receive the Horft til Himins Award for one year, and there are also great prizes in both categories.
This year, the Beint frá bíli days are held in conjunction with the hrutathukli event in Sævang from 13-16. Producers will be there to present and sell their products. It is expected that about 8-10 producers will participate in the market and there will be a wide range of products for sale.
