(CNS): Edward Street in downtown Georgetown unexpectedly closed Thursday morning, catching commuters off guard and causing traffic chaos. A press release from the Planning Department regarding the closure was not issued until late Wednesday night, and police issued notices and alerts after 10:00 a.m. saying the road would be closed until Friday afternoon. The closure was to facilitate drilling work for a Victoria’s Secret store as part of the Georgetown Revitalization Project.
At noon, the RCIPS issued a traffic advisory stating that Edward Street between Main Street and Shedden Road will remain closed to traffic due to ongoing roadwork. The closure is expected to remain overnight and into tomorrow afternoon (June 7). Eventually, vehicles traveling west on Elgin Avenue will be diverted.
Police warned: “Motorists will continue to experience significant delays when travelling in the area and are advised to take alternative routes where possible.” Police then issued an update around 3pm, saying the road was expected to reopen on Thursday.
Traffic congestion will affect daily life and traffic flow in George Town in the coming weeks as the revitalization project enters another new phase, said a news release issued by Singapore’s Planning Department and National Highways Authority on Wednesday evening.
CUC is also carrying out work at the Post Office car park, which is expected to take two weeks. Work at the intersection of Edward Street and Shedden Road will begin on Saturday, with further road closures. Further work at CUC will also begin there on June 17.
Officials said residents and businesses were urged to stay informed and plan accordingly to minimise disruption, but Thursday’s disruption was largely due to a complete lack of information about the plans to close Edward Street.
CNS has contacted the ministry regarding the delay and is awaiting a response.
