The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which regulates monopoly issues in the UK, said it was concerned that Amazon’s investment in artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic might undermine fair competition in the market and decided to launch a phase one investigation.
The CMA said it now has enough information to launch a formal investigation into the transaction. According to the law, the CMA will have the right to decide whether to launch a second phase of the investigation before October 4.
An Amazon spokesperson responded that the company was disappointed with the CMA’s decision and insisted that the transaction would not harm market competition. Amazon completed its $4 billion stake in Anthropic in March.
The CMA had in July focused on an agreement between Google parent company Alphabet and Anthropic to form an alliance.
