HARGEISA (HOL) – The Somaliland government strongly refuted Recent CommentsEgyptian Foreign Minister’s comments on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Somaliland and Ethiopia. Somaliland officials have described the comments made by the Egyptian Foreign Minister at a joint press conference with Turkey on August 5 as inaccurate and misleading.

“It must be made clear that Somaliland is not and has never been part of the Mogadishu government. We are a unique and independent country with a rich history, culture and democratic institutions. The people of Somaliland exercised their right to self-determination on May 18, 1991 and established the Republic of Somaliland within its internationally recognised borders,” the statement said.
Somaliland urged Egypt to respect its sovereignty and focus on regional issues such as the Libyan, Sudanese, Palestinian and Lebanese conflicts. The statement concluded: “The people of Somaliland are determined to embark on a path of full recognition by the international community and will not be hindered by unfounded accusations or interference in our internal affairs.”
Egypt and Turkey reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding Somalia’s territorial integrity amid a regional dispute during recent high-level talks in Cairo. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdulati and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stressed their opposition to any efforts to undermine Somalia’s unity. This follows a controversial agreement reached between Ethiopia and Somaliland on January 1 to lease a 20-kilometer coastal area, which Somalia considers a serious violation of its sovereignty.
