7 August 2024 (ZALINGAI) – Five children died of hunger in Central Darfur, a spokesman for displaced people said on Wednesday, highlighting the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s conflict zone.
The deaths were reported in the Mukjar refugee camp, where many people have sought shelter from fighting between government troops and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group that broke out in April.
Adam Rijjar, spokesman for the General Coordination Organization for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, said the deaths highlighted the dire conditions facing people displaced by the conflict.
“The coordination council received reports yesterday (Tuesday) that five children died of hunger in the Mukjar refugee camp in Central Darfur,” Rijal told Sudan Tribune.
The conflict in Central Darfur, where the Rapid Support Forces control much of the region and the Sudan Liberation Movement controls parts, has displaced millions of people, disrupted aid deliveries and left many without access to food and health care.
In a press statement, Rijal lamented that the lack of adequate aid and the impact of the war on agricultural production had led to widespread food shortages.
“Acute malnutrition remains a serious health challenge that requires more efforts from the United Nations and international organizations to stop ongoing wars… and develop effective strategies to reduce the incidence of famine,” he said.
