U.S. prosecutors have accused President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, of accepting bribes from a Romanian businessman who sought to influence U.S. government agencies. The allegation was brought in an ongoing criminal tax case. be opposed to Hunter Biden.
The U.S. Department of Justice made the allegation in a court filing in Los Angeles on Wednesday (August 7), and Hunter Biden is scheduled to go on trial on tax evasion charges on September 9. Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty.
According to ABC News, the allegation involves Hunter Biden’s collaboration with a wealthy Romanian businessman named “GP.” Reuters speculated that “GP” might be Gabriel Popoviciu, but this has not been confirmed.
Prosecutors say GP hired Hunter Biden to do legal work in 2015, when Joe Biden was vice president under President Barack Obama. They plan to present evidence that Hunter Biden and his associates accepted bribes from the businessman, who sought to influence U.S. policy and public opinion in an investigation into GP in Romania.
Prosecutors allege that Hunter Biden and his associates feared the political repercussions of their lobbying efforts for Joe Biden. They further allege that Hunter Biden sought to conceal the true nature of his work for “GP.”
Hunter Biden’s tax case dates back to December, when a grand jury indicted him on charges that he failed to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019, despite spending millions on drugs and luxury goods. He also faces charges of intentionally evading a 2018 tax assessment by filing a false return. Hunter Biden is charged with three felonies and other misdemeanors.
In a separate trial in June, Hunter Biden was convicted by a Delaware jury of lying about using illegal drugs when buying a handgun in 2018. He is still awaiting sentencing.
