The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) has expressed serious concern about the current traffic problems in the East, Central and West Ends of Honiara City.
In recent months, SICCI members have expressed dissatisfaction over poor communication mechanisms regarding construction timelines and regular road maintenance updates, which has led to traffic problems.
The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the organization responsible for private sector business in the Solomon Islands, has expressed to the government its members’ concerns about the huge impact that the current traffic problems are having on the country’s private sector.
SICCI is seeking proactive measures with key stakeholders, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), the Honiara City Council (HCC) and the China Civil Engineering Group Corporation (CCECC).
To alleviate the huge impact of traffic congestion on the country’s business sector.
SICCI Chief Executive Officer, James Dolarii, said during a roundtable held at Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara on Monday, July 29, 2024 that the private sector is the engine of economic growth in the country; ensuring we have an enabling environment is critical for business growth and expansion.
He said the current traffic problems were causing huge losses to the business sector operations and required immediate intervention as the situation in the long term would lead to loss of revenue and business for SICCI members.
“In a slow economic environment like the Solomon Islands, small businesses on tight budgets are suffering millions of dollars in losses.”
“This is due to delays in service delivery, late staff, unbearable logistical cost increases, over-budget maintenance and repair expenses, and disruptions to appointment and meeting schedules.”
Mr. Dorari said SICCI hopes to establish close partnership, collaboration and coordination with RSIPF, HCC, MID, CCECC and other relevant stakeholders to identify potential strategies to control traffic congestion and create a conducive environment for the operation of private enterprises in the country.
SICCI wishes to thank the relevant departments and other stakeholders for their valuable cooperation so that the concerns of the private sector regarding traffic congestion issues do not go unnoticed.
SICCI wants to see improved traffic flow in eastern, central and western Honiara, ensuring private businesses operate efficiently and profitably.
RSIPF, MID, CCECC, Solomon Water and the SICCI Secretariat all participated in the roundtable discussion.
