Cotonou hosted the fifth International Forum on Participatory Democracy in Africa, bringing together more than 800 participants to discuss contemporary issues.
August 8-10, 2024 CotonouBenin, the economic capital of Benin, has transformed itself into a true crossroads of participatory democracy by hosting the 5th International Forum on Participatory Democracy in Africa (FIDEPA 05). This major event, organized by the International Observatory of Participatory Democracy (OIDP) Africa, brought together more than 800 participants from different backgrounds to discuss this important theme: ” Citizenship and participatory democracy are levers for recovery in the context of geopolitical, economic and transition crises. »
Core themes of contemporary challenges
“In the face of geopolitical and economic crises and the multiple transformations of the continent, the theme of this Forum could not be more relevant. The debates were rich and constructive, aiming to propose concrete actions to strengthen democratic achievements and promote inclusive recovery. “Every effort has been made to make this event a landmark moment in the history of participatory democracy in Africa,” said Franck Kininvo, Coordinator of FIDEPA.
One of the main objectives of the Forum is to promote exchanges between local authorities and actors in participatory democracy. This will involve sharing experiences and effective practices that have proven effective across the continent. The Mayor of Cotonou, Luc Setondji Atropko, stressed the importance of these discussions in consolidating social cohesion in Africa. Indeed, in the context of multiple challenges, cooperation and exchanges between African countries appear more necessary than ever.
Promoting Benin as a destination through FIDEPA
In addition to the debate, FIDEPA 05 offers a unique opportunity to promote Benin’s cultural and tourist wealth. Participants will have the opportunity to explore iconic sites such as the Songhai Agro-ecological Center in Porto-Novo, the historical sites of Ouidah and Abomey, and Glogibe Industrial AreaThese visits are part of a desire to enhance Benin’s attractiveness on the international stage by highlighting its tourism and economic potential.
It is no coincidence that Cotonou was chosen to host this major event. Mayor Luke Atroko recalls that the city has played a central role in promoting participatory democracy on the African continent. The forum will celebrate excellence in local governance and decentralization, while reflecting on current issues and future prospects. For Bachir Kanouté, Secretary General of IOPD Africa, it is an opportunity for Cotonou to consolidate its position as a leader in this field in Africa.
