Police spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga told Kigali Today that while investigating the cause of the accident, they found that the vehicle was speeding and they started checking the vehicle and found that the driver had removed the speed limiter from the vehicle.

“In the past three weeks, we have had several incidents, most of which were caused by speed limits. During our investigation, we found that some buses had had their speed governors removed,” he said.

After realising that these cars were one of the causes of accidents, all passenger cars were checked and whoever was found making these mistakes had his car removed from the road so that it does not continue to cause problems.

A police spokesman said while the accident was caused by a variety of mistakes by road users, there were some things that should have been corrected, including speed limiters on cars and drivers avoiding removing them.

“We will discuss with the companies responsible for transporting people the steps they can take to prevent drivers from making this kind of mistake, which could even cost lives,” he said.

ACP Rutikanga advised motorists to be careful and avoid making any mistakes that could lead to accidents as they are likely to happen.

“We ask them to obey traffic rules, not to make phone calls, not to drink and drive, and to check whether the vehicle is safe, especially those who mistakenly remove the speed limiter. The police will understand them and punish them,” he said.

After eight drivers were arrested for removing the “speed governors” from their vehicles, ACP Rutikanga said they would continue to conduct checks on all passenger vehicles to ensure that no such offences were committed.
