Why is this important?

Boeing, the US aerospace giant, is a major contractor for US Department of Defense and NASA orders. The guilty plea and possible penalties could bring severe consequences to the company, including being disqualified from doing business with the government for a period of time.

What is Boeing accused of?

Prosecutors have accused the company of deceiving regulators who approved its planes and pilot training requirements. The company’s current guilty plea will be filed in U.S. District Court in Texas. As part of a 2021 settlement, the Justice Department agreed not to prosecute the company if Boeing complied with certain conditions for three years. Now, after being accused of violating those conditions, Boeing must go to court.

737 Max problems

There are many technical problems with the 737 Max aircraft. In recent years, there have also been two disasters involving them: in Indonesia in October 2018 and in Ethiopia in March 2019. A total of 346 people died. The Boeing 737 Max was grounded for 20 months before it was allowed to fly again.
