A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Thursday, but there were no immediate signs of major damage.
The quake initially triggered tsunami warnings for coastal areas of Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, though national broadcaster NHK later said the alert had been lifted.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters that no reports of abnormalities at the nuclear power plant had been received since the earthquake, and the government was examining the losses and casualties.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck at 4:43 p.m. (0743 GMT) near Miyazaki prefecture in western Kyushu island.
NHK reported that after the earthquake, waves as high as 50 cm were observed in Miyazaki Prefecture.
